Survey findings show young people's hopes and fears (posted 13 Oct 2011)

The young people of Bradford are backing the planned Westfield shopping centre and want to see it delivered as soon as possible.

A survey of young people across the District carried out by Bradford Property Forum has revealed that a new shopping centre is the one single attraction that would bring them back into the city centre.  The news follows on from BPF's last meeting in September which debated how best to increase footfall into the heart of the city.

There was a strong view expressed by survey respondents that there is simply 'not enough to do' in the centre and that young people go elsewhere for their leisure pursuits.  While this news won't be a world revelation to many, undertaking the survey has still been welcomed by decision-makers and the young people themselves.  Politicians and senior council officers have confirmed that this type of work has not been done before locally, and the 15-25 year olds taking part have welcomed the opportunity to comment in this way.

Concerns about safety, levels of crime and the downbeat appearance of parts of the centre also featured prominently.  The findings will now be highlighted and debated at the next BPF event on 16 November, and a report has been circulated to key officers in Bradford Council and those who helped to get young people to take part.  The respondents themselves are also being informed of the results.

Other findings from the research show that people see live music as being the most attractive and important type of activity that should take place in the new City Park when complete.

BPF chairman Paul Mackie, of Rex Procter & Partners, said:  "People were very creative in some of the ideas suggested for new things to take place in the city; and very supportive that there should be a mix of events and activities that cater for all ages and tastes.  Yes, there are concerns about safety and cleanliness and that's understandable, but we won't be using the survey as a stick to beat anyone with.  Young people have had the platform, we'll be inviting some of them to speak with us and senior city leaders, and working hard with others to bring some of those ideas to fruition."
